Acute: <14 days; chronic: > 14 days: dysentery: blood or mucous in stool. Bacterial enteric pathogens: most common cause of illness in children and adults, majority of infections acquired through fecal-oral route, but ingested of contaminated food and water. Cause: inflammation of the gi tract due to bacteria. Symptoms: abdominal pain, bloody stool (sometimes), loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting: blood stool associated with mucosal invasion of the bacteria, watery stool no mucosal invasion. Typically associated with bbq season, so almost opposite to viral gastroenteritis season. Common pathogens: salmonella, campylobacter, bivrio, shigella, e. coli, c. perfringens, c. difficile.
