Lecture 3 MUSC 102 01/20/2014 Polyphony – fugue Polyphony Fugue (form), bach, ­ ex. I pushed a kid in a pool… ­ repetition, not one outstanding instrument­ all seem to be weighted equally ­ different instruments have the melody throughout the piece ­ sounds very controlled (baroque era) Counterpoint ­ all of the notes are going against one another ­ contus contre punctus  ­ note against note Classical ERA 1) phrases become 2 & 4 bars 2) harmony▯ really simple, slow chord progession 3) accompany ▯ really simple,  ­ string quartet,  classical involves allowing people to play in a group, allows people to play who aren’t as strong as  ­ others ­ alberti bass▯ breaking up chord and playing it one note at a time (p. 118), has instruments underneath   main, texture is light and optimistic very homophonic 4) Freemasons 5) Middle class 6) Music publishing 7) New genres▯ string quartet, opera buffa (orpheo▯dido▯comedy) all major genres become secular 8) Style – lighter more optimistic 1748▯ first concert hall built – allows composers to write for concert halls not just patrons What is the  ­ new ideas, individualism, defining cultures  enlightenment? ­ more optimistic for the avg person, music is more common French encyclopedia, 35 VOL of knowledge everyone can use­ printing press ­ ­ Social groups ▯ freemasons  ▯ a secret society of people coming together for mutual support and  charity, wider range of classes coming together and mix, dominated by men ­ More public concerts ­ More people wanted to play music themselves ▯ sheet music is published more, middle class can join ­ Composers become more self employed  Classical/ rococo ­ what  ­ decorative, playful style favored by court and aristocracy is the style ? ­ rococo­ music that is more playful, simplistic and appealing In regards to artwork Haydn ­ employed by Esterhazy family ­ they wanted pubic performances, employed a small orchestra, he has to write  a lot of music every  week ­ 1732­1
