Document Summary

Musc 102 intro to the history of western art. Rhythm: defining rhythm organizing sound and silence in time. In music, this is done by arranging pulses, often called beats, into units of different lengths called notes (representing sounds) or rests (representing silence) One of the most common values for a beat is a quarter note. Also tells us which beats get a slight accent. 9/8 is a compound triple meter: dotted rhythms and syncopation = techniques for enlivening rhythm. Adding a dot after a note adds half the value of the note: syncopation creates an accent in an unusual place in the measure. In a syncopated rhythm, some notes seem to come ahead of the beat, it is as if the measure gets an accent in a unexpected place. 4: tempo speed of the beat. Presto very fast: melody the tune in music. The shape of the overall melody is determined by the way the phrases interact.
