MUSC 171 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Victor Talking Machine Company, Paul Dresser, Mamie Smith
Document Summary
In 1887, emilie berliner developed the flat gramophone disc, which was more durable, cheaper to produce and easier to store than wax cylinders. In the 1890s the first nickelodeons (later known as jukeboxes) were set up in public spaces, playing the hits for just a nickel. The american market in phonographs was firmly dominated by columbia records and the victor talking. In 1902 the 12-inch shellac disc was introduced, playing music at 78 rpm; these disks could hold up to four minutes of music. This was the standard type of record issued for sale in the usa until 33 1/3rd rpm long-playing discs and 45 rpm singles were introduced in the late 1940s. Hit records in the years preceding world war i fall into two broad thematic categories: the unsettling effects of change-immigration, social and geographic mobility, and technological innovation-encouraged the continuing popularity of sentimental songs. Schizophonia is the splitting of sounds from their original sources.
