Radio in the 1920s was live and included live music. 1930s-the great depression caused live music to be too expensive. Djs- 1920s but by 1935: 1st all recorded radio show. Martin block- dj of the 1st all recorded show. Union in america is the afm (american federation of music) In 1942- the afm put a ban on musicians from making recordings. For 10 months, no musicians made recordings (1942) Record companies agree to pay musicians each time a recording is payed on the radio. Singer makes the melody last as long as they live. "lining out"- giving the words ahead of time. Literacy-not all can read music a) b) c) d) During wwii 1938-1945, a lot of white and black folks moved to cities for jobs- war-related manufacturing. Went from the south to north since there were more jobs there. Took trains up to cities & back home on holidays. Piano was often left on trains for entertainment.
