PHAR 340 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Edrophonium, Myasthenia Gravis, Physostigma Venenosum
Document Summary
There are indirectly acting cholinergic drugs and directly acting cholinergic drugs! Indirectly acting cholinergic drugs include inhibitors of cholinesterase in which increase acetylcholine availability! Directly acting cholinergic drugs can be muscarinic receptors +antagonists & nicotinic receptor agonists & antagonists! Cholinesterase inhibitors can be fast, medium, or slow! > medium as in up to 6 hours! > slow as in many days > organophosphate, insecticides and nerve gases like sarin; they phosphorylate the substrate binding site and inactivate the enzyme! Methacholine acetylcholine can act on both muscarinic and nicotinic. Methacholine is predominantly going to act on muscarinic receptors; can be degraded by cholinesterase a bit and can act on nicotinic receptors a bit! Carbachol can act on both murscarinic receptors and nicotinic receptors > Muscarinic receptors a bit more than a bit ! Does not act on nicotinic receptors and is not degraded by cholinesterase.
