Twilight of the Idols 3/6/2013 9:30:00 AM By twilight, he means a large portion of modern history Ideas and definite commitments are shared amongst society  Those convictions are now disappearing Our ideals are now idols  Not committed to them o Environmentalism, democracy, freedom Marriage  committed so long as a good sex is involved Moral/political ideals ring hollow and do not maintain justification Belief in democracy  belief that it is the best yet do not vote METAPHOR of twilight is that the sun represent our ideals  The sun is going down  Semi-illumination Darkness is nihilism  belief in nothing  Absence of philosophical basis for believing Nietzsche is sounding out our ideals  Ideals now ring hollow when struck by a hammer? Philosophy is not a blackboard exercise  The meaning/value of human existence No specialists job in any profession to provide their culture with coherence and direction  This falls to the philosopher o Incorporate within ones thinking the skills of very many professions Must speak in a personal way to the readers  It falls to the reader to do the philosophical thinking Wagner was friends with Nietzsche  Had a lot in common with regards to the roles of a philosopher and artist  Wagner did not want to please or entertain but produce a passionate, bold, intense and introduce a grand scale of things Nietzsche also wants to maintain this grand scale and passion Socrates is regarded as a symbol of philosophy Nietzsche admires some but more not of ancient works  Great number of specific philosophers Apollonian/Dionysian  From a philosophical point of view, Apollo  reason, understandable, knowable, well-ordered  Dionysius  wild, passionate, out of control Dichotomy found within ancient Greek philosophy There is no wrong dichotomy  Philosophers thought in very dichotomous ways Plato  Passions are morally problematic  Reason is not problematic however Form a soul itself  A child who is exposed to architecture and art forms a persons soul  Stories told about the Greek heroes and gods All art must be censored as it has a profound effect to form ones soul  This art is not real o What is real is
