There is no ethics in this book. Bad faith is not a moral failing, it is an ontological condition. There is an enormous amount of conflict in interpersonal relations. Conflict regarding how we see each other and how my own understanding of myself is profoundly affected by other people. (cid:862)hell is other people(cid:863: gloomy view of human relations, this is not his actual point. His point is that bad faith produces a pervasive distortion in human life. He does not take the view that interpersonal relations are doomed to failure. I see this person as an object of a certain kind, maybe functionary. In itself this is one way in which i see a person: but they look at me too, this is a two-way street. If so(cid:373)eo(cid:374)e looks at (cid:373)e, i(cid:859)(cid:373) a(cid:374) o(cid:271)je(cid:272)t of (cid:449)hate(cid:448)er ki(cid:374)d. I am forced by their look to see myself through their eyes in the way that they see me.
