Document Summary

Week #2 (jan 14th) international order and world politics . We now live in states, however it was not always like this. There was only 42(ish) states in the world prior to the 20th century. There are now 193 states in the world. The world used to be under the jurisdiction of empires. Empires ruled the world, such as the british. Empire, french empire, ottoman empire, russian empire, etc Human society was organized differently in the past, politically. Wwii continued this change with the fall of the british, french and other empires. State has exclusive authority over a state. (talk about other definitions in next lecture) Alternative theories (fewer scholars deal with it or the theory deals with a small aspect of politics) Marxism would have been a mainstream theory instead of constructivism 25 years ago. It was a theory that many scholars used to try and understand world order/politics. Failed theory , but there are still marxists out there.
