We saw both candidates making appeals based on identity (women, white people, working class, educated) Particularly the african american experience on tuesday, latinos on thursday. Voter turnout grew substantially during the civil right movement in african american voters. White voter turnout has stayed, since confederation, above 60%, african american started at about 10%, is now higher than white turnout. Republican party is effectively the white peoples party (89% white representatives) The democratic party has far more diversity (60% white) Would have benefited clinton in 2016 if african american voters had been more active. White: 5ish% ddidnt vote, almost 75% voted clinton, 3% voted 3rd party, 12% voted trump.
