Infancy and Childhood: Cognitive and Emotional Development

• Cognitive development is the study of changes in memory, thought, and
reasoning processes that occur throughout the lifespan
• Assimilation – a conservative process, whereby people fit new information into
the belief systems they already possess
• Accommodation – a creative process whereby people modify their belief
structures based on experience
• The Sensorimotor Stage
o Fro 2 , ’
of the world are based on immediate sensory (eg. seeing, feeling) and
motor (eg. grabbing, mouthing) experiences
o Object permanence – the ability to understand that objects exist even
when they cannot be directly perceived
• The Preoperational Stage
o Ages 2-7
o Language development, using symbols, pretend play, and mastering the
concept of conservation
o Conservation is the knowledge that the quantity or amount of an object is
not the same as physical arrangement and appearance of that object
• Concrete Operational Stage
o Ages 7-11
o When children develop skills in logical thinking and manipulating numbers
• Formal Operational Stage
o 11-Adulthood
