Human Sexual Behavior: Psychological Influences
• Alfred Kinsey
o Created the Kinsey scale/spectrum of sexual orientation

offensive at the time
o Opened opportunities for current researchers to find out what motivates
human sexual behavior
Physiological Influences
• Physiological measures of sex
o Sexual response cycle – describes the phases of physiological change
during sexual activity, which comprises four primary stages: excitement,
plateau, orgasm, and resolution
o Males & females differ in patterns of orgasm
▪ Refractory period – a time period during which erection and orgasm
are not physically possible (males)
▪ Meanwhile, some women experience multiple orgasms without a
refractory period
• Sexual Orientation: Biology and Environment

members of the opposite sex (heterosexuality), same sex (homosexuality),
or either sex (bisexuality)
