Document Summary
Neuroplasticity- capacity of the brain to rewire itself based on experience. Brain stem- consist of the medulla and pons, perform basic functions such as breathing as heart rate. Cerebral cortex- outer layer of the brain involved in higher functions (thought, language, personality) Lesioning- researchers intentionally damage a part of the brain to isolate brain structures. Sham group- control group in a lesion study. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (tms)- electromagnetic pulse is delivered to a specific part of the brain. Structural neuroimaging- type of brain scanning that produces images of the different structures. Computerized tomography (ct)- technique in which x-rays are sent through the brain by a tube that rotates around the head. Magnetic resonance image (mri)- clear images of the brain are made from seeing how different regions absorb and release energy while in a magnetic field. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fmri)- measuring brain activity by detecting inflow of blood into neural regions that were just active.
