Document Summary
Psyc 100 - introduction to psychology - lecture 8: sensation and perception. Sensation is the process by which our sensory systems gather information about the environment. Perception is the selection, organization and interpretation of sensations as meaningful objects and events. Transduction process by which electrical potentials in receptor cells are generated in response to physical stimuli. Quantitative amount or quantities that can be measured objectively. Qualitative pertaining to some quality or characteristic other than magnitude. Vision sensing light and its reflections off surfaces with eyes. Includes perception of objects in three dimensions at a variety of distances and with a multitude of colours and textures. Hearing is sensing vibration in air with the ears. Gustation (taste) and olfaction (smell) are called chemical senses because they both work through chemical compounds binding to specialized receptors in the body. Treated together because they work in similar ways and often work together in perception.
