Document Summary

Memory- the stored representation of past experiences: real: the mental processes of acquiring and retaining information for later retrieval, a cognitive process that allows organisms to adjust their behaviour in an ever-changing world. Memory is measured as behavioural change due to past experience. Memory is connected to all cognitive processes however it should be studied independently because it cannot explain all processes completely. Students easily find their way to a lecture hall on campus, but they are not doing so by memorizing the route from one building to another (otherwise it would be impossible to get there from a different location). Instead, humans develop a spatial map of their surroundings that allows them to compute current position in relationship to global landmarks. Memory contributes to this process by using past experience to update spatial computations. Memory requires a lot of brain power, using resources that could contribute to survival or reproduction.
