PSYC 235 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Twin, Twin Study, Heritability
Document Summary
Hypothesis (educated guess: testability - a hypothesis must be formulated so that it is testable - the ability to support the hypothesis through testability is important for science. Research design: combination of factors you want to manipulate and their response. Independent variable (iv: variables you will manipulate and change. Dependent level is depression (how it changes and what makes it change) Internal validity: extent to which we are confident that the independent variable caused the dependent variable to change. External validity: how well the results of the study relate to the aspects of the real world beyond the study, or how the findings generalize to people who were not part of the research study. Use these 3 techniques to improve internal validity: control group, randomization - each person has an equal chance of being placed in any condition, analogue models - recreating aspects of real-world phenomena in the lab. Statistical: probability of obtaining an observed effect by chance is small.
