Mood disorders: group of disorders involving severe and enduring disturbances in emotionality ranging from elation to severe depression. Most common diagnosed severe depression is referred to as major depressive disorder. Major depressive disorder: a mood disorder involving one or more major depressive episodes (separated by at least two months without depression) Hypomanic episode: less severe version of a manic episode that does not cause marked impairment in social or occupational functioning and need last only four days as opposed to a week. Individuals who suffer from either depression or mania are said to be unipolar in their disorders, because their mood remains at one pole. Almost everyone who suffers from unipolar disorder usually develops depression. Mixed features: condition in which the individual experience both elation and depression or anxiety at the same time. Research states that manic episodes are characterized by dysphoric features more commonly than was thought and dysphoria can be severe.
