Emotions = a complex, coordinated reaction to significant events (izard, 1993) Characterized by : neural responses, physiological responses, subjective feelings, cognitions related to feelings (thoughts we have surrounding an emotion, desire to take actions, expressive behaviour (usually) Will you see your family again?: going to have a strong urge to escape the situation (desire to take action, you"ll probably show signs of fear (expressive behaviour) Emotional expression = the ability to express clearly different emotions: primary emotions are expressed early in first year of life, secondary emotions (shame, embarrassment, envy) emerge in second and third year of life.
