Tools for research: measurement techniques individuals perform certain behaviours and their brain activities are recorded. Largely correlative in nature: manipulation techniques more invasive in nature e. g. tms (transcranial magnetic stimulation). Magnetic resonance imaging scanner: very strong, quickly shifting magnetic field. Mri vs. fmri: mri structural image of brain anatomy fmri experimental purposes, images brain function. Anatomical imaging: mri closer to indicating the underlying anatomical structure. Mri vs. fmri: mri a bunch of slices, one 3d volume fmri relatively low resolution images. Can get the entire readout of all the activity in the brain in two seconds: provide indirect measure of brain activity. Pulsatio(cid:374)s i(cid:374) the (cid:271)rai(cid:374) : angelo mosso pulsations in the brain that could be measured in newborn infants. Measured blood flow changes that occurred: found that when the individuals engaged in mental activity, there was increase in pulsation in the various areas. The first "brain" imaging experiment: correlate of mental activity.
