Instructional Workshop: Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
• Equity vs. equality – background and individual differences
• Based in CLT, constructivism (zone of proximal development)
• Three guidelines:
o Engagement – recruiting interest sustaining effort and persistence; self-regulation
o Representation – perception; language and symbols; comprehension
o Action/expression – physical action; expression/communication; executive functioning
• Strengths:
o Flexibility of framework – easily implemented
o Increases accessibility – considers diversity and disability
o Guidelines frequently updated
• Weaknesses:
o Threat of cognitive load being too much – overload students with various forms
o Potential pushback from instructors
