Week 22: Mental Health: Schizophrenia and Mood • Four sets of criteria for a substance use disorder o Impaired Control: taking the substance in increasingly larger doses or for longer than intended and difficulty cutting down. Cravings and a lot of time focused on obtaining, using, and recovering from the drug o Social Impairment: Repeated failure to fulfil important obligations as a result of the substance, continued use of the substance despite the problem s it causes with social and interpersonal relationships. Important social, occupational, or recreational activities given up or reduced because of substance use o Risky Use: Repeated use of substance in a situation that is dangerous, continued use despite knowing that you have a significant psychological or physical problem due to the substance use o Pharmacological Issues: Tolerance, increased doses needed to achieve desired effect. Withdrawal, tremors, vomiting, agitation, seizures, etc. occur whenever substance starts to leave the tissue and blood stream. • Differentiate between substance use and substance-induced disorders o Substance induced: substance intoxication and substance withdrawals o Temporary states that the individual experiences when they are under the influence or has recently developed adverse effects due tot reducing or halting use of the drug o Share characteristics with mental disorders like psychosis, amnesia, sleep problems, anxiety and depression • Characteristic symptoms of schizophrenia o Psychotic disorders fall into five domains: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking grossly disorganized or abnormal motor behaviour, and negative symptoms o Positive symptoms: usually reflect an excess or distortion of a normal function o Negative symptoms: reflect a diminution or loss of normal function o The presence of at least two of the following with at least one of the first three: • Delusions • Hallucinations • Disorganized speech
