September 19, 12 PSYCH 100 Lecture 2 Wednesday Correlational Study or Experiment? Something is not an experiment if it has no independent variable to be manipulated.  If you want to figure out how to manipulate mood, run a preliminary study about what  affects people’s mood before going on to do a study about how mood affects how much a  person gives to charity. Does exposure to second hand smoke affect children’s cognitive development? – It is can  be done as a correlational study or an experiment (but this brings up the question of  ethics) Cognitive development is so long term that it is hard to keep out other factors.  Correlational studies can vary and can never tell us about cause for sure.  Research question:
