PSYCH Lecture Week 20 Motivation and Emotion What motivates us? Drives ­> Regulatory ­> Internal states ­> Nonregulatory ­> Social, safety, education, reproduction What motivates us? Pleasure. What pleasures us? (poll) Sex, good, friends or family, success, thrill seeking? Friends and family come out on top, followed by success, food, sex, thrill seeking. Our brain is everything we are, feel, think and do. How do we make decisions? Survive and procreate. Sex or sandwich? How do we study the brain? • Human neuroimaging (correlation [two variables vary together], though cannot  prove causation)  • Acquired brain injury • Surgery • Post­mortem • Animal research Animal Research • Results in knowledge/medicine to help with real world problems • Provides a fundamental understanding of how our brains function • Involves strict ethics boards • Minimal harm standards Link: brain and behaviour: Seeing a rat level­press for brain stimulation reward was an epiphany for me – and one of  the main reasons I’m in psychology, probably – so I agree that it is a powerful  demonstration of the link between brain and behaviour!” – Ingrid Johnsrude E
