WEEK 4 ONLINE LESSON NOTES DIAGNOSIS 1-clinically significant: distress causing impairment in everyday life (severity in social interactions, duration, etc) 2-can only be diagnosed if the stress or impairment is due to internal causes 3-behavior must be involuntary consider biological (genetic), psychological, and social variables PROS + CONS OF DSM: PROS: -reliable system and measurement of mental disorders -increases objectivity CONS: -grey area as to which symptoms should be included -mild and severe forms grouped together, due to the categorical system (creates bias) -males and females manifest symptoms differently (they respond to their environments differently) PHOBIAS: -agoraphobia (panic disorder) -social phobia -specific phobia PTSD: specific triggers, difficulty feeling close to people, feeling as though the world is a dangerous place, flashbacks, sleep disorders, difficulty concentrating GENERAL ANXIETY DISORDER: sleep d
