Suicidality: broad construct of behaviours associated with suicide. This includes actual death by suicide, preparation, suicide ideation. He"s attempting to determine causality. To establish cause and effect: associative variation, sequence of events, absence of other causal factors. There cannot be random assignment in this, because you cannot assign someone to express suicidal behaviours. Therefore the aim is to determine the absence of other causal factors. Looking at statistical conclusion validity. Worldwide estimate of suicide is 1 million per year. Canada and the us it"s about 12/100 ,000 people. Death by suicide is more common in males. Elderly men have one of the higher rates. Rate of suicide has increased from 8/100,000 in the 1950s to 12/100,000 now. Basically, when they control for hopelessness, depression is not a significant predictor of suicide intent. When they control for depression, hopelessness is still significant: depression hopelessness suicide intent. Identify that those who committed suicide had scored higher on the hopelessness scale.
