Traits are typical styles of thinking, feeling and acting in different situations and at different times. Traits are over the long haul how you act in certain situations. Cannot be measured directly, so often regarded as hypothetical concepts. Height can be directly measured, personality/traits however cannot. Finding traits that can be applied to all ppl at all time. Identify basic traits that are common to all: theoretical, begin with a common wisdom/theory, lexical, explores a particular language and identifies synonyms to describe personality, measurement, works to discover important personality aspects and measurement techniques. All 3 of these routes led to the big 5. Goal is to find a model that is exhaustive and parsimonious. Eysenck: general and specific traits can be studied within a single person. Trait level: one beh at one time does not determine a trait. Indivi high on this factor tend to be: Being able to inhibit impulses, showing delay of gratification, following norms.
