Modern history treatment masters and johnson. Before sex problems was field of clergymen, general psychotherapists & marriage councillors. Approaches tried to embrace whole person/couple but was ineffective and time consuming. Looked at symptoms in a brief and direct way: masters thought sexual functioning needed to be seen through philosophy, religion, psychotherapy and as a subject of scientific inquiry. Followed the development of treatment as a scientific endeavour (effort) Treatment model brief and intense behaviourally oriented sex therapy with goal to take away problems of sexual functioning. Observed couples with sexual problems that avoid anything that may lead to sex. Also observed during sex pressured tone in voice, focus on measuring up, staying hard and timing the orgasm: spectatoring the focus on ones functioning. Therapy is seen as successful when ability to achieve and maintain on erection rigid enough for penetration is evident.
