PSYC 351 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Social Learning Theory, Behaviorism, Synaptic Plasticity
Document Summary
How does change happen, hoe does stability occur. Sought to link present problems with early life experiences. Really a theory of personality development and mental health. Emotions affect body and mind over long term. Defense mechanisms, allows protection of our personal balance and arrangement, shame/guilt. Comprehensive psychosocial stage theory, revolves around the resolution of certain issues. Social learning theory, didn"t really talk about this. Shame --> failure to live up to (ego) ideal. Based on cognitive coping with stress-acknowledges subjective experience. Core relational themes (what make us feel that way, base of emotion): Radical or extreme form emerged to battle biological determinism (eg mead) Less radical form present in almost all theories of development (ie nurture is important) Lazarus, said you cannot have emotion without appraisal first, cognitive appraisal proceeds emotion. Zajonc, disagreed, and cited evidence that emotional proceeds the experience or appraisal. The debate never really settled, it more so faded away.
