PSYC 370 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Endocrine Gland, Adrenal Gland, Adrenal Medulla
Document Summary
Mamawawa (men are men and women are women assumption)- tendency to think about femaleness and maleness as discrete, mutually exclusive, opposite categories. Adrenal cortex (outer layer of the adrenal glands)- function is the regulation of glucose and salt in blood. Endocrine glands- release hormones directly into circulatory system, which then carries it to destination. Exocrine glands- release chemicals via ducts into digestive tract or outside of body (ie. sweat glands: not part of endocrine system. Neuronal transmission: hormones bind to receptors on target cells that are typically distal to the endocrine cell that released the hormone, axons release chemical messages at localized synapses, chemical messengers bind to receptors. Steroid hormones: fat soluble, both extra-cellular and intracellular receptors. Testes- produce sperm cells; ovaries- produce ova: zygote- the product of a single sperm cell fertilizing an ovum. Contains all the info necessary for normal growth of a complete adult organism.
