Conflict was not between empirical science and authoritarian religion, it was between the different views within the catholic church about how to interpret nature and scripture. Natural knowledge is produced by sense and reason, revealed knowledge is produced by the supernatural uncovering the truth. Sense experiences of others must be witnessed and repeated by many others before it is accepted. Experiments and observations would not make sense without the use of reason. God planted the seed of knowledge and philosophers harvested the truth. The ultimate source of knowledge was god, humans adopt to certain techniques to acquire that knowledge. The only possible kind of revelation was from god directly to the individual.
