Remove ourselves from the duality of self and others. Wholeness and relationality: modernist school of buddhist thought. Believes we all have the potential to be enlightened. Eliminate pain, we suffer because of attachment. Simple living: we believe we have separate autonomy from the world. This separation is only at the surface. At a deep level, there is no separation between anyone: we are all connected in a web of relations, dependant arising. Everything is made out of everything else: impermanence. Everything is changing: everything is empty. Zero is nothing, but can be made into. Deep ecology anything: we are embedded in nature as a whole, our existence helps us contribute to nature. Li and shi: emptiness and reality. All part of a larger picture: parts create the whole. 5 characteristics of totality and existence: hawayen emphasizes whole and totality, the whole is always changing, the whole is not more important than its parts, each part is unique, relationality.
