Old kingdom: pharaoh had a capacity that apparently the nobles didn"t have. He had the ability to become a god, accompany ra in his boat as it sailed across the sky. Be identified with the lord of the dead and enter the realm of the dead, but reign there as well. To achieve power over the deadly forces that human beings have to face. Caused a lot of debate in egyptology however, writers seem to agree there is a distinction between office of kingship and person of king, developed in ancient egypt. Pharaoh, associate with idea of kingship in ancient egypt, comes to us through hebrew from egyptian paro, really means great house. Palace is standing in for what pharaoh represents = capacity to rule over the country. Egypt was dominated by powerful people called nomarchs, as place divided into sections called nomes- administrators disappeared after reorganization, and reorganized into 3 major sections, southern, middle and northern section.
