Gospels apocalyptic, messianic, jesus as unique teacher of the law, the death of the messiah, empty tomb. Acts beginning of the church-the rocky transition from jewish sect to gentile religion (should new converts be circumcised?) Paul the death and resurrection of christ is not just a rst-century event, but a cosmic, universal one. Christ defeats the powers and principalities of this world. The law is insu cient: for what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the esh, god did by sending his own son in the likeness of sinful. For paul, the apocalypse is now: the mystery of salvation is cosmic, the apocalypse or unveiling of this cosmic plan has happened in christ. Christian ethics: ideal vs historical reality. Origen of alexandria, and his allegorical way of reading the bible. In the east: athanasius and the cappadocian whose mystical trinitarian theology shaped the nicene creed.
