Yoga body- the origins of modern posture practice mark singleton. Little to no evidence that asana has ever been the primary aspect of any indian yoga practice tradition. Asana performance in transnational yoga today is a new phenomenon that has no parallel in pre-modern times. Singleton does no privilege traditional yoga over modern yoga: there is no gold-standard. Pre-modern yoga does not represent a touchstone for what constitutes real or authentic yoga: to do that would imply that yoga sis flawed. Modern yoga has a substance, flavour and cultural history of its own. Singleton: modern yoga = homonym, modern yoga has no direct, wholesale genealogical affiliation" to pre-modern yoga. Modern yoga is not a product of the west of an appropriation by the west. Modern yoga is a product of specific cultural processes taking place during indian modernity. Asana = modernized = medicalized and turned into a system of physical culture.
