Enlightenment thinkers sought to escape the darkness of ignorance, the cruel unknown vicissitudes of nature, the arbitrary constraints of religious dogma and mysticism, and the shackles of tradition. 3 approaches to knowledge: the natural sciences: descartes, newton, locke, bacon, hume, interpretive humanities: kant, hegel, goethe, dilthey, political economy: hume, ferguson, smith, stewart, mill, ricardo, say (disappears and reappears in the 1960"s). 3 key figures in the emergence of sociology: karl marx, emile durkheim, max weber (associated with the society union b/c thought to have similar ideologies) 1836 transferred to the university of berlin. Banned from gaining an academic post someone wanted to eliminate all radical views. Brought him to the center of hegelian scholarship (hegel) and the debates that surrounded his philosophy.
