SOCY 122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 29: Short Twentieth Century, Gulf War, Korean War
WEEK 10
March 20 2017
Steroid use in sport:
- 1959 high school football players
- A number of self-report studies confirm college, high school and middle school users
- *
- *
- Use can begin in adolescence
- Non athletes who use steroids typically came from low socioeconomic backgrounds
- The current social construction of steroid use fails for three reasons:
o It simplifies why steroids are used and how they can be eliminated
o It fails to address how safe lifestyle practices and moral behaviour is actually
developed in youths – that complexity can’t be found in a slogan
o It fails to address the deeply embedded tacit rules of sport and everyday lifestyle
choices.
WAR AND GENOCIDE:
The short twentieth century
- Eric hobswell wrote:
o Age of catastrophe (1914-1945)
o Golden age (1945-early 1970)
▪ North America and Europe had economies that were doing well and this
raised the standard of living
o Age of decomposition, crisis (1970s to 1989 and beyond)
- There have been many wars
o French Vietnam 1945-54
o Korean war 1950-53
o American Vietnam 1950,1963-73
o Russia/Afghanistan 1980-89
o Iran/Iraq 1980-88
o Gulf war 1990-91
o Bosnia-hercegovina 192-95, Croatia 1991-95, Kosovo 1999
Anyone’s son will do:
- All soldiers are born civilians
- “freedom” “democracy” “das volk”. “allah” – the closer you get to the trenchers the
fewer the abstract nouns
- Boot camp – teach basic skills; “we brainwash them a little but you know they’re good
people”
