Gender and work:
- Women have always worked there is a history of inclusion and exclusion; a history of
restriction
- For greater equality in the paid labour force changed perceptions of men and women,
end of discrimination, changes in domestic labour practices, child care support, and
occupational sectors of employment
First wave Feminists:
- End of the 19th beginning of the 20th centuries
- Middle class reformers
- Access to education and professions
- Women regarded as weak, vulnerable, sexually exploitable
- “Classist” reform
Second Wave Feminists
- 1960s and 1970s
- Pursued principles of liberal democracy equality rights
- Redefined physical capabilities of women
o Showed that women were physically capable of doing some of the jobs that men
were doing
- Successful use of courts and legislation
- Employment Equity Legislation
o Argues that there are 4 groups of Canadian society that faced discrimination
Women
Aboriginals
Minority
Disabled persons
o Employed in proportion to “pool of qualified workers” who come from those 4
categories
E.g. if half of the pool of qualified workers are women then half of the
workforce should be women
- Pay equity legislation
o Equal pay for work of equal value
o Comparison of skill, effort, responsibility, contribution to enterprise
Women and work:
- Post-WWII university expansion and increased female participation
- Women’s movement opened opportunities in paid labour force
