SOCY 273 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Symbolic Interactionism, Impression Management, Type Physicalism
Document Summary
Study the self, self-concept, and identities rather than the concept of personality. The self is s a process in which we construct a sense of who we are through interaction with others. The self-process at a given point in time is the self-concept. Self-identity: the kind of person we see ourselves as. We use symbols and language to communicate w other people but we also use it to think internally which is called self-indication. Me: organized set of attitudes towards the self-based on the views of others. I: the active self the person you are conscious of here and now. Make our self-image more concrete to ourselves. Identity theory: our identities are linked to things like race, athletic abilities, etc (bio) Identity control theory: trying to control our identity, through small changes. Affect control theory: about the way we feel towards things, negative feeling=something wrong in the situation.
