We cant go about our daily lives without it. Technology is involved with processes of social change. When it breaks down we realize how dependant we are on it. The community is very dependant on all types of technology. Radical other to humanity: nothing social about technology. Objects that have been purposefully modi ed, modelled, or produced by humans. Doesn"t take into account the different ways things can be used. Technique = end + means to that end (heidegger) Technology may be strategic but is usually much more. Clearly technology is not external to society, but social in a strong sense. Focus on materiality neglects the active ways in which technology. Focus on human manipulation neglects variety of uses. Focus on strategic, rational action neglects (creative,un[planned) appropriation. Challenges to the study of technology and society. Dif cult to keep up with all the new technology. Many changes associated with technology are speci c to a particular group.
