AER 318 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Bombardier Cseries, Airliner, Airbus A320 Family
Document Summary
Passenger jet travel had changed a great deal since 1991. The romantic, jet-setting culture of the pan am era had all but disappeared, and it had taken the jumbo jet down with it. Airlines and fliers had different concerns among them, cost cutting, security, and high tech conveniences that hadn"t been on the radar before. Smaller, regional jets were still doing brisk business, but in the wake of embraer"s success they had become commoditized. Embraer was maintaining its lead on the grounds of cost alone. Unlike the crj, bombardier elected to build its new jet entirely from scratch. The cseries was one of the first commercial jets to be designed from the ground up using computer simulations. The ability to tweak and test the design virtually allowed bombardier"s engineers to try out ideas the competition hadn"t been able to implement before.
