Coastal countries able to explore beyond their own boundaries: sextant: used as a navigation system. European settlers in americas brought planning + architecture of their homelands: modified it to the climate + resources of the new world, still tried to use classicism. New materials created a new form of architecture: first settled in: Old capitals (emphasis on vernacular architecture no architect used) The spanish got there first: 1496: santa domingo, dominican republic first surviving colony. Churches= most important design: quality varied based on available materials, designs were based on contemporary european styles. Was translated differently through less qualified workers + craftsmen: 1550: rise of classicism. Used indigenous techniques of adobe + wood. Buildings in quebec were very similar in style to those in france. North america= full of wooded areas adopted timber-framed architecture. Latin america mimicked portugal + spain: ship technology used.
