BLG 316 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Muscular Layer, Median Plane, Triploblasty
Document Summary
Most animals share intrinsic materials and functional plans. 5 major levels of organization: protoplasmic level, unicellular organization, organelles. Simple epithelia in all metazoans, but stratified are mostly vertebrates: connective: binding and supportive functions. Few cells, more extracellular fibres and a ground substance where they are embedded. Blood, lymph, interstitial fluid, cartilage, bone: muscular: most common, striated(skeletal/cardiac) or smooth(visceral) muscle fibres, nervous: receiving stimuli and conducting impulses. Animal body plans: symmetry, how balanced the proportions are. The smaller cells are found in the grooves of the larger cells. Each cells developmental fate is determined early: mosaic development: radial: planes of cell division either parallel or perpendicular to vertical axis. Cells are formed directly on top of the other. The capacity to develop into complete embryo is retained during the early stages: regulative development: overview of body cavity formation, the zygote undergoes cleavage to the eight cell stage.
