Genetics lecture 2 study notes: single gene inheritance. Refers to things such as the development of plant flower color, animal locomotion, nutrient uptake etc. Gene discovery- a genetic approach that involves trying to understand biological properties by finding the subset of genes in the genome that influence that property. Gene discovery begins with the search for mutants in a specific biological process. To understand any biological property using genetics, we have to: find the genes in the genome that influence the property, understand their function at the molecular level. Isolating mutants and checking each one for single gene inheritance patterns. A: to visually screen a collection of a large number of individuals and looking for mutants within the populations. Genetic dissection- process of using mutants and wild type organisms to understand which gene is affecting the inheritance of a trait.
