Document Summary

Key concepts to keep in mind i: protein structure and protein-ligand interactions. Proteins are polymers of amino acids: amino acids join covalently to form polymers, amino acids are joined by a bond called a peptide bond. R group varies in amino acids and gives the amino acid its properties. Properties will allow the surface of the molecular snake to fold, interact, and form a specific shape. Ionic interactions, repulsion, van der waal interaction, electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding. Secondary = local folds (alpha helix and beta sheets) Tertiary structure = global structure of protein is formed, local folds coming together. Proteins bind to other things/ligands: a ligand can be anything from a small ion to a complete protein. After the protein binds to the ligand it needs to have a function/action. Two main things that proteins need to do: bind and action. The shape dictates ligand specificity (which specific ligand can interact with the protein)
