Document Summary
Chap 5 (p. 112-115, 123-129), chap 6 (p. 134-171), chap 7 (p. 177-203) Skeletal system = bones, cartilage, ligaments and joints which stabilize and interconnect them. Framework that help maintain body shape and allow movement. Bones very strong and can resist tremendous bending and compression forces without breaking. General anatomy of a long bone (fig 5. 2-5. 4) Cortex = outer portion of bone (fig 5. 3c: made of hard compact bone, the superficial layer of compact bone is covered by periosteum (fig 5. 4) Periosteum: a connective tissue wrapping that is connected to the deep fascia, it is complete everywhere except within a joint, where the edges or ends of two bones contact one another. Isolates and protects the bone from surrounding tissues, provides a route and a place of attachment for circulatory and nervous supply. Actively participates in bone growth and repair, and attaches the bone to the connective tissue network of the deep fascia.
