Otto loewi - heart in soln, soln used on 2nd heart to see if slowing or speeding. Beating heart released chem in soln -> 2nd heart slowed by that chem - slowing activity, vagusstoff (acetylcholine) Parasympathetic + ach = slows down - normally this. Remove heart - speeds up bc under its own auto-rhythmicity. Bathe in salt water soln - beat fast. In water soln containing ach - slows down bc still has ach receptors. John eccles - many synapses use chemical mediator. Furshpan and potter (crayfish) + akira watanabe (lobster) - electrical synapses. Common in brain - we have both chemical and electrical synapses. Heart uses gap junction to coordinate whole activity. Gap junction - involved in electrically coupled cells by connexons formed by 6 connexins. Ions flow from cytoplasm of one cell to cytoplasm of another. Found in epithelial cells, cardiac muscle cells, smooth muscle cells, liver, glia, etc.
