What is privacy: secrecy, the right to boundaries, the right to be left alone , the right to control information. Why is privacy important: prevents people from being judgemental, fear of identity theft, limits the power that corporations/government can have against you, defines who we are, and our relationships with others. Individuality: certain secrets are necessary in order to promote competition, rights based reasons, privacy is an inalienable right -> no one can"t take it away from you. Last few centuries: cameras, printing press, social media, transportation -> news travels quicker, which ones have decreased privacy, audio/video recording devices, which ones have increased privacy, locks, curtains/blinds/tinted glass, encryption. Privacy and employment: why does employment necessarily have an effect on privacy, access to social insurance number, asking for references, drug tests, access to contact information/address, good distinction: necessary impacts vs. ones that are optional .
