Idea is to apply theories of human development to understand the child"s current developmental status & are thus able to recognize typical growth and development patterns & trajectories. Judgments that behaviour is normal or abnormal are frequently made without an understanding of the child"s social history, cultural & ethnic diversity & history or the immediate situational variables. Focus is on optimizing children"s development & social competence & recognizing the strengths that the child or youth has. These strengths allow him/her to cope with circumstances that pose risks to developmental outcomes. Incorporates several theoretical perspectives & applies them to practice. Developmental theories can be grouped in 5 areas: Psychoanalytic: ages & stages, predict should be accomplished. Behavioural & social cognitive: focus on learning & environmental factors as primary. Ethological: focus on biology & importance of critical periods that happen in certain ages. Ecological: development influenced by transactions of different environments.
