Genes provide a blueprint however experiences influence how or whether genes are expressed; plasticity is greatest in the first years and begins to decline. Serve and return interaction between children and significant adults, meaning children reach out for interaction and the adult responds; fundamental to wiring of brain. Learning to cope with adversity is important in development, toxic stress activates the body"s stress management system in the absence of adult support, without caring adults as buffers stress can weaken the architecture of the brain. Brain develops in utero where it is just as vulnerable; brain stem in utero, midbrain and limbic system in first 3 years, frontal lobes not until late adolescence. Brainstem responsible for core regulatory functions, limbic system for emotional responses guiding behavior, cortex for complex human functions such as speech and decision making, prefrontal for logical thought and problem solving. The frontal cortex is the most uniquely human (still 96% shared with chimps)
