Describes communication practices in terms of the combination of the textual, aural, linguistic, spatial, and visual resources - or modes - used to compose messages: the combination creates a richer form of communication. Have an effective way of communicating behaviour and understanding. Try to use compatible language and terminology in speaking about different modes because they form integrated texts : modal affordance. Potential uses of a given object arise from its perceivable properties. Affordance refers to the potentialities and constraints of different modes what is possible to express and represent or communicate easily with the resources of a mode, and what is less straightforward. The affordance is shaped by the nature of the mode. Text lacks visual power but is good at communicating common sense and critical reflection. Images play to our irrational and emotional side and is rich in visual power. Interplay links rational mode and visual mode: salience. Elements in images attract attention to different degrees.
